The Wobblies are coming! The Wobblies are coming!
This year, from September 3-5, Baltimore welcomes members of The Industrial Workers of the World to our charming city. Why you ask? Well, we're honored to have been chosen to host the yearly Democratic Convention for the IWW. Each year, Wobblies gather in a chosen city to continously determine the future of the One Big Union.
The working class and the employing class have nothing in common. There can be no peace so long as hunger and want are found among millions of the working people and the few, who make up the employing class, have all the good things of life.
Between these two classes a struggle must go on until the workers of the world organize as a class, take possession of the means of production, abolish the wage system, and live in harmony with the Earth. (Preamble to the IWW Constitution)
The Industrial Workers of the World was founded in 1905, at one of the most important events in our labor rights history, the "Industrial Union Convention", otherwise known as the first annual IWW convention. It was formed, and continues to exist, in order to unite workers in revolutionary struggle and solidarity, to eradicate the employing class, and to abolish the wage system. Affectionately known as "Wobblies" or "Wobs", members of the IWW also seek to unite the working class into One Big Union stating that:
We find that the centering of the management of industries into fewer and fewer hands makes the trade unions unable to cope with the ever growing power of the employing class. The trade unions foster a state of affairs which allows one set of workers to be pitted against another set of workers in the same industry, thereby helping defeat one another in wage wars. Moreover, the trade unions aid the employing class to mislead the workers into the belief that the working class have interests in common with their employers. (Preamble to the IWW Constitution)
Today the Wobblies continue their long and proud history of radical struggle through organizing specific shops, building a Construction Workers Union, organizing the historial first-ever campaign to organize fast food workers through the chain Jimmy Johns, the incredibly inspirational continual organizing of Starbucks workers, and numerous other endeavours.
As a city, we should be psyched to host this momentous gathering of rabble-rousing Wobs.
The convention will take place at The 2640 Space, a cooperative events venue in Charles Village, that grew out of and is famillially tied to Wob-Shop, Red Emma's Bookstore Coffeehouse.
All IWW members can attend the convention- but anyone can help make it happen.
Childcare will be provided by Baltimore's own radical childcare collective: Kidz City!
Putting together an event of this magnitude takes exceptional energy, time, and capital. To fulfill one of these needs, The Baltimore Branch of The Industrial Workers of The World has been putting together a series of fundraisers. If you like fun then you're bound to like the next event, as it's a truly rockin' concert - at one of Baltimore's best radical spaces: The Baltimore Free Farm.

Come out! Have summer fun! And let's support our local Wobblies in bringing Wobblies from everywhere to Charm City. Let's make 2011 Baltimore Convention, like none the IWW has ever seen!
It is the historic mission of the working class to do away with capitalism. The army of production must be organized, not only for everyday struggle with capitalists, but also to carry on production when capitalism shall have been overthrown. By organizing industrially we are forming the structure of the new society within the shell of the old. (Preamble to the IWW Constitution)
AN INJURY TO ONE IS AN INJURY TO ALL!
